Raccoons
Raccoons, also called Washer Bear, are omnivorous, consuming a varied diet that includes berries, insects, fruit, and small mammals. However, they can make a nuisance of themselves by raiding garbage cans and tearing up lawns. Raccoons prefer swampy areas or woods, and they live near streams, lakes, and marshes. They normally prefer the use of hollow trees or logs, rock crevices or abandoned animal burrows for their dens. Raccoons will also use your home for dens including chimneys, attics, and hollow areas beneath porches and buildings.
Raccoons do not eat cats or dogs. However, they will attack and fight if cornered. If a raccoon appears to be overly aggressive and is attacking pets or people, then there is a good possibility that this raccoon is rabid. Raccoons are most active at night and are not commonly seen. If observed during the day, it is possibly sick or injured.
In severe winter climates, raccoons may become dormant but do not hibernate. Not all sleep in the morning.
Raccoons mate from January to March and after a 63-day gestation period, a litter of 1 to 7 young are born. Males and females generally will not mingle until the mating season. Males have no part in raising the young but will live together in groups of up to 5 other males. By late summer, the litter will be weaned and will begin to fend for themselves. The family group is social, remaining together for almost a year. Raccoons seldom survive beyond seven (7) years in the wild.
Raccoons can contract several diseases, some of which can be transmitted to humans and pets. They should never be fed or considered as pets.
