About Fleas

Fleas

Fleas are external parasites, living off the blood of mammals and birds. There is genetic evidence that indicates that they are descendants of the Scorpion fly.

Fleas are small, agile, usually dark colored wingless insects with tube-like mouthparts that they use to feed on the blood of their hosts. Their bodies are compressed, permitting easy movement through the hairs, fur, and feathers on the host’s body. They have long legs which are used in jumping. Fleas do not fly or crawl. Adults can leap up to thirteen (13) inches horizontally and seven (7) inches vertically. Fleas can withstand great pressure, allowing them to survive scratching and squeezing between fingers.

Female fleas can live up to two (2) years, during which time she can lay up to 1,000 tiny white oval shaped eggs. Adult fleas must feed on blood before they can reproduce. Eggs are laid in batches of up to twenty (20) or so, usually on the host itself, which easily roll onto the ground. Areas where the hosts rest and sleep (pet bedding, carpet) become one of the primary habitats of eggs and developing fleas. The eggs take around two (2) days to two (2) weeks to hatch. Larvae emerge from the eggs to feed on any available organic materials. They are blind and avoid sunlight, keeping in dark places such as cracks, crevices, bedding, furniture, etc. Various stimuli including vibrations, sound, and body heat alert them that a host is near, which will provide a warm blood meal.

Fleas can transmit diseases and other parasites and infections to humans, dogs, and cats. The most prominent of these are Bartonella, murine typhus and tapeworms.
